Eight things to know about Boko Haram, the terrorist network that kidnapped hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls

It was not the first time Boko Haram had kidnapped women, but its abduction last month of more than 200 girls from their boarding school at dead of night has become an outrage felt round the world, thanks to social media. Women’s rights advocates in Nigeria demanded action and the word spread on Twitter, Facebook and online. The #BringBackOurGirls hashtag has now been shared almost two million times. U.S. first lady Michelle Obama has offered her support, as has Pope Francis.
