CP accuses Amaechi of mobilising youths against Jonathan

THE Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, on Thursday accused the Rivers State government of mobilising youths against President Goodluck Jonathan. Mbu said this while giving reasons for the chasing out of 13,000 newly-recruited teachers from the Liberation Stadium where they had gathered to receive their letters of posting on Wednesday. Armed policemen had stormed the stadium and chased away the teachers.

B’Haram linked to group behind Kenya mall attack • US report says Nigerian sect may have anti-aircraft missiles

A report by a committee of  the United States House of Representatives has linked the  fundamentalist Islamist sect, Boko Haram,  to al Shabaab, the terror group that carried out the September 21 Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya. Al-Shabaab is a Somali-based group whose members are said to be highly proficient in suicide bombing. The  report dated September 13, 2013 and  entitled,  ‘Boko Haram: Growing Threat to the US Homeland’, also acknowledged the growing relationship between the  Nigerian sect  and another terror group, the Al Qaeda in the land of the Islamic Maghreb.

Taraba: My deputy betrayed me, says Suntai

AILING Taraba State Governor Danbaba Suntai has accused his deputy, Alhaji Garba Umar, of betrayal. Suntai said he least expected the deputy governor to lust for his (Suntai’s) office given the  confidence he reposed in him. Suntai, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Sylvanus Yakubu, said the governor was not the only one that felt betrayed but the entire people of the state.

This what happened to a Chinese woman made a miraculous escape after her car was crushed by a giant container as she was driving alongside a lorry carrying the huge, orange box, which suddenly listed to one side. Iran wants nuclear deal 'in months'

Iran's president says he wants to conclude a deal on Tehran's nuclear programme in three to six months, as key talks are due to begin in New York. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says he wants to reach a deal with world powers on Tehran's nuclear programme in three to six months.

He told the Washington Post he saw a resolution of the issue as a "beginning point" in easing US-Iran relations. Mr Rouhani said he was fully empowered by Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, to negotiate on the issue. On Thursday, Iran will hold talks with the P5+1 group of world powers on Tehran's uranium enrichment programme.

China court jails general's son Li Tianyi for rape

A court in China convicts the son of a high-profile army general and sentences him to 10 years in jail for rape, state media say. The court said Li Tianyi, 17, and four others raped the woman at a Beijing hotel in February after having drinks. He had denied any sexual relations with the woman, whom he alleged was working as a prostitute, previous reports say.

There were indications on Wednesday that a major financier of a  kidnapping ring in Edo and other surrounding states, Kelvin Oburuvbe might have been arrested by men of the Department of State Security. It was reliably gathered that the kidnap kingpin was picked up in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, by operatives of DSS and is currently being interrogated.

£3,000 visa bond plan being reviewed – UK

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, has said the British government is reviewing its plan to introduce a £3,000 visa bond scheme. He also said while there were security concerns in Nigeria, they were not overwhelming in many respects and could be managed.
Pocock said this on Wednesday when he visited the Nigerian Stock Exchange to ring the closing bell, and to discuss ways in which more British companies could be encouraged to invest in the nation’s capital market.
