Authorities in Honolulu are investigating a 24-year-old man’s death while trying to prevent a 19-year-old man from committing suicide on the campus of the University of Hawaii-Manoa, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

The incident happened during a party at a 14th-floor dormitory early Sunday morning, when both men fell from the ledge outside. The 19-year-old was listed in critical condition as of Monday. Neither victim reportedly attended the university, but were invited by the dorm’s occupant.

According to KHON-TV, one witness told police that he heard yelling coming from the room, then saw the man try to stop the younger man’s suicide attempt. The witness then heard glass breaking and saw the two men fall to the ground.

A university spokesperson, Dan Meisenzahl, said the school is investigating whether the student code of conduct was broken during the course of the evening. The incident occurred shortly before hundreds of students were scheduled to move into their own dorms. Counseling services have been made available for the student body.

“This was a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to the family and friends of the two men,” Meisenzahl said.
