A Massachusetts police officer involved in a fatal car accident on Saturday was already facing charges for operating a vehicle under the influence, the Eagle-Tribune reports.
Officer Eric Wayne was arrested at the scene of the crash that resulted in the death of Briant Paula and charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence with an open container. This is the second time in the last year that Wayne has been cited for driving under the influence.
After the last incident, he was placed on administrative leave. He was just reinstated in June.
According to police, Wayne’s Land Rover crossed the double yellow line and struck the Mercury Mountaineer being driven by Paula head on. Paula was extracted from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life and transported to a hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His sister, Lois Paula, who was in the passenger seat, is expected to survive.
A spokeswoman for the Essex County District Attorney, Carrie Kimball Monahan, told the Eagle-Tribune that the department was aware of Wayne’s outstanding charges for driving under the influence last summer.
Wayne is a well-known police officer in Lowell, Massachusetts. He had a bit role in the 2010 film The Fighter, and his father was a highly decorated detective. In May, the Boston Globe profiled him as the city’s “unofficial vegan mayor.”
“People are attracted to him because of his vitality,” the owner of a raw food restaurant said of him at the time. She even named a dish after him, “The 5-0,” which contains “everything — shiitake mushrooms, beets, carrots, seaweed, kale, broccoli, squash, brown rice, quinoa, and two different sauces.
He will be featured in the upcoming documentary about the benefits of a vegan lifestyle called The Healing Effect.
