Keane slams United players, directors over Moyes sack
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, has criticized the club’s chief executive Ed Woodward and the players, for failing to support David Moyes during his short stint as manager.
Moyes was officially relieved of his duties on Tuesday morning, but Keane feels he was not given enough time to turn the club’s fortunes around.
“I think it’s a shame,” Keane said on ITV Sport. “I think he should have been given more time and some of the players at Man United should be ashamed of themselves. I think they really let him down.
“He certainly had a hard start last summer when he took the job. The chief executive [Woodward] didn’t get the deals done that he [Moyes] wanted and it created a lot of negativity. They had a slow start and no momentum.
“For David Moyes to finish seventh in the league, he’ll be disappointed with that, but you still need people around you to help you in every way they can and he has certainly not had that, especially from the players. I think he deserved a bit more time, definitely.”
Keane, who has exchanged words severally with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, surprisingly defended the role his former boss played in Moyes’ appointment and said the club as a whole must take responsibility.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say it was his [Ferguson’s] pick of Moyes,” Keane added. “He obviously put his name forward and the club had to make the decision. You can’t be too critical of Alex Ferguson.”
