Darren Young, a wrestler with The Prime Time Players, was asked in an
interview with TMZ whether a gay wrestler could ever be a success.
"Absolutely," he replied. "Look at me. I'm a WWE superstar and
to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. "And I'm happy. I'm very happy." His statement might force him to change his Twitter profile, where he
described himself to his 190,000 followers as something of a ladies' man.
"As comfortable in the VIP section as he is in the ring, Darren Young’s
life revolves around three things — money, women and wrestling,"
it reads.
The revelation was
described by TMZ as "big, big news."
"Wrestling is a little different, particularly because of how physical it is, and how little clothing is involved - but Darren is completely unfazed," the site said.
New Jersey-born Darren Young, whose real name is Fred Rosser, made his professional debut in 2002, having competed previously in several backyard wrestling federations.
In 2005 he begun appearing on World Wrestling Entertainment programmes - the ultimate ambition for wrestlers of his style.
He was given several different "storylines" by the producers, including playing the character of "South Beach Party Boy" - a rebellious wrestler, who is pushed into joining the rival Straight Edge Society wrestlers. Ultimately he refuses, and carves out his own path as a professional.
The 29-year-old said he was not concerned that being the first openly-gay WWE wrestler could damage his career.
"I don't think it matters," he said. "Does it matter? Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me?
"I guess if you want to call it coming out. I really don't know what to say it is, but I'm just letting you know that I'm happy with who I am, I'm comfortable with myself. And I'm happy to be living the dream."
He added: "Some people might not like it, some people will like it, but I'm here to please myself, I'm here to be happy.
"It's very important to be happy with myself."
