A Nigerian man has died after jumping out of a window on the third floor of a storey building during a drug raid on Saturday, September 13, 2014 in Akash Bhavan in the Bhaunagar area of Pimple Gurav in India.
35-year-old Obyeka Anwanbukwa, an alleged drug dealer, tried to escape as a joint team of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the police raided the building he shared with other Nigerian men.
According to reports, while Anwanbukwa and his friends were being interrogated at about 8pm that night he ran and made his way through the window. He died hours later in the hospital from injuries sustained from the jump.
The senior Inspector Saifan Mujawar, in-charge of Sangvi police station, said, “He jumped out of the window when asked about his involvement in a drug peddling racket. While he suffered severe injuries, doctors at the Aundh district hospital initially declared him to be normal. Later, however, he complained of uneasiness and died during treatment around midnight.”
Anwanbukwa is suspected to be involved in the drug trade in India, the Narcotics Control Bureau has said. The police sub-inspector Deepak Jadhav, said, “The matter is being investigated further by the police. We take action only when we have confirmed information.”
Sangvi police have reportedly registered the incident as “accidental death” under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Nigerian students in India have demanded a thorough investigation into Anwanbukwa’s death.
The vice-president of the Nigerian Student’s Union in Pune, Bob Frany said “We want a thorough health examination to be done. The copies of the autopsy report should be given to us and the Nigerian embassy.”
Meanwhile, Anwanbukwa’s body was taken to the Sassoon hospital on Sunday for post-mortem.
