A Chinese national, who was a government consultant in the country, has been kidnapped by gunmen, from his residence in Kogi state, on Tuesday, 23 September.
Kogi police spokesperson, Elvis Aguebor confirmed the abduction saying, “The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday when armed men stormed the official residential quarters of the Kogi State Water Corporation and abducted a Chinese national.”
“The gunmen shot into the air before fleeing with the hostage, who was a consultant to a government water project,” he added.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 24 September, the police stated its determination to track down the attackers and free the hostage.
Abduction of foreign expatriates is a periodical occurrence in Nigeria. In May, three Dutch nationals working
for a civil society group were kidnapped in Ekeremor LGA of the Niger Delta, while on their way to inspect a hospital built by US oil giant Chevron.
Meanwhile, Chinese expatriates have been kidnapped several times in the past in Nigeria. In 2012, four Chinese expatriates were abducted on Okpoama Island, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
A year later, in 2013, Two Chinese nationals, Sung Jiang She and Zhang Wen Xue, employees of Lee Group of Companies, were kidnapped at Odongunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State and taken to a house at Sagamu-Ikorodu Road. The would be rescued days later from kidnappers by the Ogun state Police Command.
