BROADCASTER DUNO KOGBARA KIDNAPPED IN PORT HARCOURT

Popular columnist and broadcaster, Ms. Donu Kogbara, was kidnapped in front of her house in the Nkpogu area of Port Harcourt yesterday morning.

Although details of her abduction were sketchy, it was gathered that armed men in police uniforms, who drove in a Honda CRV mid-sized sports utility vehicle, accosted and abducted Kogbara in front of her house.

Her mother was said to be in the house when Kogbara was kidnapped. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway to ensure her safe rescue.

It was a sight to behold on monday as Governor Ayodele Fayose stormed the State Secretariat at 8.00 am and apprehended about 33 government workers that came to work late..

3 Aljazeera journalists sentenced to 3yrs in prison by Egyptian court

Mohamed Fahmy, Baher Mohamed and Peter Greste were today Saturday August 29th sentenced to three years in prison for ;operating without a press license & broadcasting material harmful to Egypt.'

The verdict in a retrial was issued against Mohamed Fahmy, a naturalized Canadian who has given up his Egyptian citizenship, Baher Mohamed, an Egyptian, and Australian Peter Greste, who was deported in February and sentenced in absentia.

ARIK STAFF ARRESTED AT HEATHROW AIRPORT WITH COCAINE WORTH N105M AS NDLEA COMMENCE INVESTIGATION

he National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Tuesday night stormed the headquarters of Arik Air in Ikeja Lagos following the arrest in London of a crew member of the airline for allegedly being in possession of cocaine.

The Arik crew member, identified by the anti-narcotics agency as Chika Egwu Udensi, was arrested on Monday night by operatives of the United Kingdom Border Force with 20 kilogrammes of cocaine in London.

DEFENCE BUDGET PROBE:PANEL TO INVITE 14 EX DEFENCE CHIEFS,4 NSA,8 MINISTERS OF DEFENCE

The arms purchase probe panel will examine contracts executed during the administrations of no fewer than 19 former military chiefs. They are five Chiefs of Defence Staff, 14 Service Chiefs; four National Security Advisers (NSAs) and eight former Ministers of Defence.

The probe has created panic among retired military chiefs who coordinated arms purchases in the last eight years, The Nation learnt yesterday. Some of the officers, according to sources, have started making moves to have access to “vital records”.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the remand of a blogger, Seun Oloketuyi, in prison over alleged malicious publication against the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc, Nnamdi Okonkwo.

Oloketuyi, who is the organiser of the annual Best of Nollywood Awards, was ordered to be remanded in Ikoyi prison by Justice Mohammed Yunusa after he was arraigned on a two-count charge by the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigerian Police.

A landlord in the Idumota, Lagos Island area of Lagos State, Sola Solomon, has allegedly poured petrol and set fire to one of his tenants, identified simply as Abeeb, aka Ogbon. PUNCH Metro learnt that as the victim struggled to put out the flames, the 67-year-old landlord pushed him down from the top floor of the three-storey building.

Robbery suspects cut bars, escape from police cell

Two of the robbery suspects, who were arrested while they were operating on Iju Road, in the Agege area of Lagos, have escaped from the police cell. It was learnt that 3 suspected members of the gang, who reportedly attacked and robbed a hotel and some residences of Sands Avenue, off Iju Road, had been handed over to the Pen Cinema Police Division, before two of them escaped from the cell.

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, set up a 13-member panel to probe two of his predecessors, late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on procurement of arms and ammunition for the Armed Forces.

The investigative committee’s mandate is to identify irregularities and make recommendations for streamlining the procurement process in the Armed Forces.

The committee, which was constituted by the the National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno (retd), on the directive of the President, is headed by AVM J.O.N. Ode (retd.)

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Security Adviser to convene an investigative committee on the procurement of hardware and munitions in the Armed Forces from 2007 till now. The investigative committee's mandate is to identify irregularities and make recommendations for streamlining the procurement process in the Armed Forces.

Accordingly, the National Security Adviser has constituted the Investigative Committee as follows:

The Nigerian Army has recalled over 2,500 soldiers who were asked to withdraw from service for alleged offences committed under the counter- insurgency operations code named Operation Zaman Lafiya. The review panel set up by the Army, which began sitting in Kaduna on August 17, has also screened and reinstated 102 officers, who were sentenced or facing prosecution in relation to the operations in the North-East.

The reinstated soldiers and officers, it was learnt, had commenced retraining at the Nigerian Army Training Centre, Kontangora, Niger State. The 2,500 soldiers were among the over 4,000 who responded to a memo from the Army authorities inviting soldiers for a review of recent disciplinary cases, which emanated from the counter terrorism operations.

President Buhari yesterday appealed to lawyers in Nigeria to assist in his administrations fight against corruption. President Buhari who made the appeal while speaking at the 55th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Abuja, said corruption is the main reason why Nigeria is where it is at the moment.

He stressed that in putting an end to the menace of corruption, Nigeria needs lawyers that will never sacrifice the integrity of the legal system to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no matter how lucrative the brief may be.

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, has said Nigeria is currently passing through a crucial moment. He, however, said that he was happy to know that despite this, the country was facing all the challenges with the needed vigour. The UN scribe spoke in Abuja when he held a meeting with Nigerian governors under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors Forum on Sunday.

He pledged the support of the UN to the desire of the leadership of the country’s leaders to move the nation forward. Ki-Moon said governors also played pivotal roles in the country and the world, noting that they made policies and implement programmes for the people.
