Senator Uche Chukwumerije died today, April 19, 2015 after a long battle with lung cancer, his family has disclosed. In a statement issued by Che Chidi Chukwumerije, the family stated that Mr. Chukwumerije was “surrounded by his family” as he “passed into the open arms of history, and of our Lord Jesus Christ, after a long but gallant battle with lung cancer.”
SaharaReporters learned that the legislator died at the Turkish Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. He was aged 75.
Mr. Chukwumerije came to national prominence when he served as Information Minister for the interim government regime of Mr. Ernest Shonekan and briefly the regime of the late General Sani Abacha. He later won a seat to the National Assembly where he served as a senator from Abia State.
The statement by his family added that burial arrangements would be announced at a later date.
