More than 10,000 migrants flooded into Austria on Sunday, according to police – as a war of words between Croatia and Hungary continues to escalate.
Many have faced a confusing, exhausting and unpredictable journey after being taken by bus from Serbia to Croatia, over to Hungary, and up to Austria.
Queues in excess of 12 hours were reported at the Hungary-Austria border, with some families becoming separated as coaches became full.
About 5,000 migrants are passing through Macedonia on a daily basis, making their way through the Balkan states before trying to enter the European Union.
There is a sense of urgency for thousands of refugees, amid fears that the EU will introduce more stringent measures to cope with the influx across its member states next week.
