Chimamanda writes about her father's kidnapping in the New York Times
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on her father's kidnapping 'If you don’t give us what we want, you will never see his dead body,”the voice said. What she wrote on New York Times Opinion below...
My father was kidnapped in Nigeria on a Saturday morning in early May. My brother called to tell me, and suddenly there was not enough breathable air in the world. My father is 83 years old. A small, calm, contented man, with a quietly mischievous humor and a luminous faith in God, his beautiful dark skin unlined, his hair in sparse silvery tufts, his life shaped by that stoic, dignified responsibility of being an Igbo first son.
He got his doctoral degree at Berkeley in the 1960s, on a scholarship from the United States Agency for International Development; became Nigeria’s first professor of statistics; raised six children and many relatives; and taught at the University of Nigeria for 50 years. Now he makes fun of himself, at how slowly he climbs the stairs, how he forgets his cellphone. He talks often of his childhood, endearing and rambling stories, his words tender with wisdom.

Rory McIlroy struggles to 80 in Irish Open first round
For Rory McIlroy, it was a death by a thousand bogeys on Thursday at Royal County Down -- or, at least, it must have felt that way.
The world No. 1 and tournament host at the Irish Open shot 9-over 80 for his highest round since a final-round 80 in the 2011 Masters. McIlroy didn't make a single birdie on the round, but he also didn't have a blow-up hole that ballooned his score in very windy conditions in Northern Ireland. He bogeyed half his holes, made pars on the other nine. McIlroy had to make an 8-footer at the last to save par and shoot 80.

FIFA's massive corruption scandal not a surprise
No one was surprised a bit by any of it. No one.
Not by the United States Department of Justice on Wednesday indicting 14 officials associated with FIFA, soccer’s corrupt-to-the-core governing body. Not by the already six guilty pleas and the mountain of evidence they’ll almost assuredly provide.
Not by Swiss authorities raiding a FIFA meeting at a swanky hotel in Zurich (where else would FIFA hold a meeting?), hauling guys right out of their rooms.
Not by the opening of two criminal investigations into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, to Russia and Qatar respectively, which literally everyone knows was the work of bribes and favored government contracts.

And Deana was left further humiliated when he admitted he had only married her for a visa.

“I wasn’t serious about finding love, I’d only signed up for a bit of a laugh. As soon as I saw Ben’s picture, though, I was smitten. He had gorgeous brown eyes and a great body — just my type.
We started chatting and he explained he’d come to the UK from Nigeria to study for a business degree. I couldn’t imagine being so far away from my family and friends and I told him he was really brave.”
Ben was persistent online and was keen to meet up as soon as possible. Deana was nervous at first but, three months after they started talking, she agreed to travel to London to meet him for a day of sightseeing. She continued:
