The Malaysian government is launching a new airline after a troubled year which saw three disasters involving two of its carriers Officials have put in a $1.47bn order for 20 Bombardier CS100 planes which it will use to fly in and out of airports at Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu, a hot spot for divers in Sabah, Borneo.
The airline will be called flymojo, according to plans announced at an industry exhibition in Langkawi.
The announcement comes a year after a Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down over Ukraine and another disappeared without explanation. In a further incident, a plane from AirAsia, a Malaysian budget carrier, crashed between Surabaya in Indonesia and Singapore in December.
The downing of Flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine caused the death of 298 passengers. Flight MH370, which was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, lost touch with air traffic control on March 8, an hour after take-off. It was carrying 239 passengers and crew.
The Malaysian government released a statement formally declaring the crash of missing MH370 an accident in January this year. Aviation experts believe that what happened to the flight may never be proved.Regarding the new flymojo airline, Aziz Kaprawi, Malaysia’s deputy minister of transport, said:
“As the only airline utilizing the Southern Corridor as its headquarters, flymojo will transform Senai into a key regional aviation and logistics hub - augmenting the government’s initiatives in developing Iskandar Malaysia and the Southern Corridor.”
He added that by capitalising on Kota Kinabalu’s “standing as a gateway into Malaysia, flymojo will also boost tourism into Sabah and Sarawak.”
No announcements were made on the expected start date of flymojo services, or the pricing structure.
