Super Eagles skipper Vincent Enyeama on Thursday night, demonstrated the spirit of sportsmanship, when he showed no bitter feeling over his inability to win the 2014 African Footballer of the year, which Cote d’Ivoire’s midfielder Yaya Toure won for a record fourth time.
Speaking after the elaborate and colourful awards ceremony held at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos , Enyeama said CAF was right in their decision to honour the Ivorian once again.
“ I want to say a big thank you for everything, a big thank you for all who nominated and voted for me, to CAF, to Globacom Communications limited and to members of the press. Iwant to say that I am not a bitter loser; I don’t feel bad losing to Toure. Big congratulations to Toure. I respect you.’’
On our qualification or not, it doesn’t count. It pains me that Nigeria is not gonna be there. I thank CAF for the award, I support the decision of this night, big congratulations again and I thank God for him”.
He however dismissed any notion that Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the forthcoming AFCON in Equatorial Guinea made him to lose the award.
“Our qualification did not count here. It pains me that Nigeria won’t be there’’.
