Both girls have been living on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza over the past month and their families had no idea they had travelled to South America.
The distraught parents of Melissa, William and Debra Reid, speaking at their family home in Lenzie, near Glasgow, expressed their ‘shock’ at learning of their daughter’s arrest. Fighting back tears, Mrs Reid said: ‘She met the other girl out in Ibiza. I know that, but I don’t know anything else about her. As far as we knew, Melissa was in Ibiza. That is where she has been.’ In a statement, local police said: ‘Police searched the women’s luggage. They found 18 packets of  food products with cocaine  which weighed 5.78kg in Melissa Reid’s suitcases.
‘Sixteen packets of food products with cocaine weighing 5.81kg were found in Michaella McCollum  Connolly’s suitcases.’
